Writes that he has in vain waited for a reply to several of his letters and that he is a candidate for the professorship of mathematics in the University of Virginia; notes that he is pleased with his present position but the other is desireable because it is prominent and its present pay is three thousand dollars; remarks that weather has been very cold but at present is fine and that his wife has had the left side of her face partially [paralyzed].
